A Graduation Gift from Steve Jobs
Today I will tell you three stories from my life. 今日私は私の人生の3つのお話をしようと思います。

Story 1 is about “connecting the dots.”
最初のお話は、「点を繋げていく「」ということについてです。
After high school, I attended college, but I never gradated.
高校を卒業後、私は大学に通いました。
I had no idea what to do with my life, so I decided to drop out.
何をして生計を立てるか見当もつかなかったので、私は(大学を)やめることにしました。
It was scary at the time, but now I know it was one of my best decisions.
その時は(それが)怖ったのですが、今はそれが(私の人生で)最良の決断の一つであったとわかります。
I loved the artistic posters I saw at college, so I decided to learn calligraphy.
私は大学で見た美術ポスターがとても気に入りました。そこでカリグラフィー(書道)を習うことにしました。
Ten years later, I put calligraphy into the Mac.
10年後、私はカリグラフィーをMacに導入しました。
It was the first computer with beautiful letters.
(それは、) 綺麗な文字(装飾文字)を搭載した初めてのコンピューターでした。
The dots of my life were connected with, from my college interest to Apple computers.
私の人生の点どうしがつなが(って線とな)りました。私の大学時代の興味がアップルコンピューターへとなったのです。
So here’s my advice to you.  さて、皆さんへの助言(提案)があります。
Trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.
点どうし(人生のある時点での経験)は将来何らかの形でつながるのだと信じてください。
Trust yourself. 　自分を信じてください。
It makes all the difference.   (それが人生に) 大きな違いを生み出します。

Story 2 is about love and loss. 二つ目のお話は、愛と敗北(喪失)についてです。
I was lucky.   私は幸運でした。
Early in my life, I found something I love to do.   人生の早い時期に、私が本当にやりたいことを見つけました。
When I was only 20 years old, my friend Woz and I started Apple.
私が２０歳のときに、私の友達のウォズと私はアップルを起業しました。
We made computers in my parent’s garage and worked hard.
私たちは私の両親のガレージでコンピューターを製作し、懸命に仕事をしました。
In ten years, Apple grew into a big company with 4,000 employees.
10年後、アップルは4000人の従業員を抱える大企業に成長しました。
I was 30 years old and successful. 私は30歳の成功者でした。
Then I was fired from my own company.   その後、私は自身の会社から解雇されました。
The focus of my life was gone.  私の人生の核心部がどこかに行ってしまい(失われ)ました。
I didn’t know what to do.  私はどうしてよいがわかりませんでした。
I thought about running away.    私は(ここシリコンバレーから) 逃げだすことを考えました。
But I still love the thing I did.  でも、私がしていたことをいまだに愛していました。
Getting fired did not change that. 解雇されてもそのことは変わりませんでした。
Though I don’t see it then, getting fired was the best thing for me.
その時点ではわからなかったのですが、解雇されたことは私にとって最も良い出来事でした。
Being successful was a heavy burden, but being a beginner again was light.
成功者であることは重荷でしたが、再び初心者に戻って気楽になったのです。
It was one of the most creative times of my life.
(それは) 私の人生の中で最も創造力に溢れた時期の一つでした。
I started a company named Pixar.  私はピクサーという会社を起業しました。
It became one of the most successful animation studios in the world.
(それは) 世界で最も成功したアニメスタジオの仲間入りをしました。
This happened because I was fired from Apple.
アップルを解雇されたからこそこんなことを起こせたのです。
So, here’s my advice to you.  そこで、皆さんへの提案です。
Your work is a large part of your life. 皆さんの仕事は人生の大きな部分を占めています。
You’ll be satisfied only when you do great job.
皆さんは良い仕事をしたときだけ満足感を感じるでしょう。
To do great job, you must love the you do.
良い仕事をするためには、あなたの仕事を愛されなければなりません。
If you haven’t found the thing you love yet, keep looking for it.
まだ愛する仕事が見つかっていないのなら、それを探し続けてください。
You’ll know when you find it.  見つかればわかります。
And it’ll get better and better as the years go on.
そして(あなたの仕事は)月日が流れるにつれてどんどん素晴らしいものになっていきます。

Story 3 is about death. 三つ目の話は死についてです。
I look in the mirror every morning and ask myself.   私は毎朝鏡をのぞき自問します。
” If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do the thing I am planning to do today?”
「もし今日が人生の最後の日なら、今日しようとしていることをしたいと思うかい。」
When the answer is often “No,” I know I need to change something.
その答えが度々「No」になるなら、何かを変える必要があるのだと思います。
About a year ago, my doctor told me that I have cancer.
1年ほど前に、医師に癌に罹っていると告げられました。
No one wants to die.   死を望む人は誰もいません。
Time is limited, so here’s my advice to you. 時間には限りがあります、そこで皆さんに提案です。
Live your own life. 　あなたの人生を歩んでください。
Don’t live someone else’s. 他人の人生(不本意なを歩まないでください。
Listen to your own inner voice.  あなたの内なる声に耳を傾けてください。
Have courage and follow your heart.  勇気をおこして自分の心に正直になってください。
It already knows what you want.   あなたの心は既にあなたが何をしたいかを知っているのです。
When I was young, I like a magazine that ended with the words: Stay hungry.  Stay Foolish.
私が子供のころ、ある雑誌( the Whole Earth Catalog) が好きで、その雑誌が廃版になったとき、
このような言葉がつづってありました。:  「常にハングリィであれ。常に愚か者であれ。」
I have always wished that for myself.  私はいつも自分自身がそうあるように願ってきました。
As you graduate and begin a new life, I wish the same for you.
皆さんがここに卒業され、新しい世界に飛び出されるにあたり、そのことをお伝えしたいと思います。
Stay Hungry.   Stay Foolish.  常にハングリィであれ。常に愚か者であれ。
