A glass of milk
A young boy from poor neighborhood was selling candy door-to-door to get through school.
近隣からやってきた貧しい生まれの幼い少年が学費を稼ごうと一戸、一戸キャンディーを売り歩いていました。
One day, with only one dollar to his name, he was so hungry that when he got to the next house, he wanted to ask
ある日、自尊心を失いかけ、隣の家に着いたとき、彼はとてもお腹がとても空いて食事を恵んでもらいたいと思いました。
for a meal.
When a woman of middle age opened the door, he lost his nerve and asked for a glass of water instead.
中年の女性が戸を開けたとき、彼は怖気づいてかわりに水を一杯乞いました。
The woman, not well-off herself, thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk.
その女性は、裕福ではむありませんが、彼はお腹が空いているように見えるので彼に大きなガラスのコップ一杯のミルクを持ってきてくれました。
“This is all I have,” he said as he slowly finished the milk and took the dollar out of his pocket.
僕はこれしかない持っていません。彼はゆっくりとその牛乳を飲み干しでポケットから1ドル取り出しました。
The woman replied,女性は答えました。
“You don’t owe me anything. My mother taught me never to accept money for kindness.
あなたは私に渡しに何も借りはないのよ。母が私に親切にしたときには決してお金を受け取ってはいけないと話してくれたのよ。
Be strong, young man. You’ll be great in the future”.
頑張って、君。君は将来立派になるわよ。
The boy left the woman’s house feeling not only stronger in his body but also encouraged by her kindness.
少年は体が元気になつただけでなく彼女のやさしさにも元気づけられて、女性の元を去りました。
After that day, the woman sometimes thought about the boy and her impressions from that day .
その日の後、女性はその日以来時々その少年と彼の印象のことを思い出していました。
It was happy memory for her as she never had any children of her own.
彼女には自分の子が一人もいなかったので彼女にとってうれしい記憶だったのです。
In time she got older and finally fell ill.
やがて、彼女は年老いてとうとう病気になりました。
The doctors did not know what was wrong so they sent her to a hospital in the city.
(街の)医者たちは病気の原因が分からなかったので彼女を市の病院に送りました。
The woman needed a difficult operation.
女性には難しい手術が必要でした。
When she woke up, she was very happy to be alive but she knew she faced another challenge.
彼女が目覚め、自分が生きていることをとてもうれしかったのですが、彼女はもう一つの難題に直面していることがわかっています。
Without health insurance or any family, she knew she would be paying off her medical bills for the rest of her life.
健康保険をかけていず、また家族もいなかったので、彼女は残りの人生は彼女の医療費を払い続けることはわかっていた。
The next day, a doctor knocked on her door. In his hand was a medical bill. He smiled when he gave it to her.
その翌日、一人の医師が彼女のドアをたたいた。彼の手には医療費の請求書が握られていた。彼はそれを彼女に渡しながら微笑んだ。
“Open it, please.” She was nervous as she opened the envelop.
どうぞ開けてください。 彼女は緊張ししながらその封筒を開いた。
The bill inside said,”Paid in full with one glass of milk”. Then she recognized the boy.
(封筒の)中の請求書には「一杯のミルクで満額支払い済み」と書いてあった。 そのとき、彼女は(彼が);例の少年だと分かった。
