Gon, the Fox ゴンギツネ

Gon was a naughty little fox and loved to play tricks.
ゴンはいたずら好きの子ぎつねでいたずらをすることが大好きだった。

One day he saw a man, Hyoju, by the river.
ある日、彼は川のそばでヒョウジュという男を見た。

Hyoju’s basket was full of eels.
ヒョウジュのかごいはいっぱいのウナギが入っていた。

Gon crept up and let the eels out of the basket.
ゴンはこっそり近づいてウナギをかごから外へ出した。

Hyoju shouted, but Gon and the eels escaped.
ヒョウジュは大声をだしたが、ゴンとウナギは逃げてしまった。

 

The days later, Gon went to the village.
十日後、ゴンは村に行った。

There were many people in white kimonos at Hyoju’s house.
ヒョウジュの家には白装束を着たたくさんの人がいた。

Hyoju looked sad.
ヒョウジュは悲しそうに見えた。

Gon thought, Hyoju’s mother died.
ゴンは考えた、ヒョウジュの母さんは死んだのだと。

The eels were her.
ウナギは彼女のためのものだった。

Now, Hyoju is alone, like me.
もうヒョウジュは僕と同じように独りぼっちなんだ。

 

The next day, Gon took some fish from a vender cart and left them at Hyoju’s house.
翌日、ゴンは魚売りのかごから魚を取り、ヒョウジュの家に置いた。

Another time, Gon brought some chestnuts and heard something.
また別のときに、ゴンは栗をもってきて、あることを聞いた。

Hyoju said to himself, “ The fish vendor is angry with me.

ヒョウジュは独り言を言った、「魚売りは俺に原をたてていた。

But I didn’t take the fish.”

だが、おれは魚を取っていない。」

 

After that, Gon only brought chestnuts and mushrooms for Hyoju.
そのあとは、ゴンは栗ときのこだけヒョウジュに持ってきた。

He said to his neighbor, “ Every day, I receive food from someone.
彼は隣人に行った、「毎日、おれは誰かから食べ物を受け取っている。

― gifts of chestnuts and mushrooms. Who brings these things?”
栗やキノコの贈り物だ。誰がこれらの物を持ってくるんだ。

 

The neighbor said, “ Maybe it’s a god.”
隣人はいった。「たぶん神様だよ。」

Gon heard and thought, “It’s not a god, it’a me.”
ゴンは聞いて思った。「神様じゃなくて、僕だよ。」

 

The next day, Gon crept through the door into Hyoju’s house.
翌日、ゴンはドアをはってヒョウジュの家の中にはいった。

Hyoju looked up.
ヒョウジュは視線をあげた。

“That’s Gon, the naughty fox! He took my eels!”
「あれはゴンだ。やつがおれのウナギを取ったんだ。」

Hyoju picked up his gun. Bang!
ヒョウジュは鉄砲をつかんだ。バーン!

 

Gon fell to the ground.
ゴンは地面に落ちた。

Then Hyoju saw the fresh chestnuts on the floor.
そのとき、ヒョウジュは床に取れたての栗があるのを見た。

“ Oh, Gon, was it you? You helped me?
ああ、ゴン。お前だったのか。お前が俺を助けてたのか。」

Gon nodded weakly.
ゴンは弱弱しくうなずいた。

Hyoju dropped his gun.
ヒョウジュは鉄砲を落とした。

Blue smoke rose from his gun.
鉄砲から青い煙がたちのぼった。
