A Glass of Milk

Once, a poor young boy was selling candy door-to-door.
昔、ひとりの貧しい少年が一戸一戸キャンディーを売り歩いていた。
He was earning money to go to school.
彼は学校に行くためのお金を稼いでいた。
He was very hungry, but he had only a few coins.
彼はとてもお腹がすいていたが、コイン(硬貨)を2～3枚しか持っていなかった。

The boy went to a house to sell candy.
少年はキャンディーを売りにある家に行った。
He knocked on the door and a woman opened it.
彼がドアをたたくと、一人の女の人が戸を開けた。
She said, “I have no money for candy.”
「私にはキャンディーを買うお金はないわ。」と彼女は言った。
She was not well-off herself.
彼女自身裕福ではなかった。

When the boy was about to leave, the woman said, “Wait.”
少年が(まさに)去ろうとするとき、「待って。」とその女性は言った。
She felt sorry for him because he looked very hungry.
彼女は彼がかわいそうに思えた、なぜならば彼ととてもお腹がかーすいているように見えたからである。
So she brought him a glass of milk.
そこで、彼女は彼に一杯のミルクを持ってきた。

 

When he finished drinking the milk, The boy felt much better.
その少年がミルクを飲み終えたとき、彼はずっと気分が良くなった。
He took the coins out of his pocket, and said, ” Thank you for the milk.”
彼はポケットからコインを取り出して言った「ミルクをありがとうございます。」
The woman replied, ” You don’t need to pay.  We don’t need money for kindness.”
女性は、「払う必要はないわ。親切にはお金は必要じゃないのよ。」と答えた。
Before he left, she said, “Be strong, young man, and you’ll have a great future.
彼が去る前に、彼女は言った。「頑張りなさい、坊や、(そうすれば)あなたには素晴らしい未来が待っているわよ。」
Thanks to her kindness, the boy felt stronger than before, and walked away with a smile.
彼女にお礼を言って、少年は以前より元気になって、にっこり笑いながら歩き去った。

After that day, the woman sometimes wondered about the boy.
その日以後、女性は時々少年はどうしているかと思いをめぐらした。
She hoped he was doing well.
彼女は彼がうまくやっていればいいなぁと思った。

The years went by and the woman got old.
長い年月が過ぎ、女性は老いた。
One day, she felt ill and fell down in front of her house.
ある日、彼女は具合が悪くなり家の前で倒れた。
The local doctor could not help her, so he sent her to a big hospital in the city.
地元の医師は彼女を助けられなかったので、彼女を市の大きな病院に送った。

The doctors had to give her an operation right away.
医師たちは直ちに彼女に手術をしなければならなかった。
When she woke up, she was happy to be alive.
彼女が目覚めると、自分が生きていることが嬉しかった。
Then, she realized, ” I have no money for this operation. What should I do?”
そのとき、彼女は気づいた。「私には手術に払えるお金がないわ。どうしましょう。」

The next day, a doctor came to her room.
翌日、一人の医師が彼女の部屋に入ってきた。
He had an envelope in his hand.
彼は手に封筒をもっていた。
He gave it to her and said, ” Here’s your bill for the operation.”
彼はそれを彼女に渡して言った。「あなたへの請求書です。」
She was afraid to look inside.
彼女は中味を見るのが怖かった。
He smiled and said, ” Open it, please.”
彼は微笑んで「開けてください。」といった。
Inside there was a note.
中にメモが入っていた。
It said, ” Paid in full, with one glass of milk.”
そこには、「支払い済み(全部支払われています)、一杯のミルクで。」と書かれていた。
Then she looked up and recognized the boy in the doctor.
その時、彼女が顔を上げるとその医師が少年だと気づいた。
