Pictures and Our Beautiful Planet

❶ One photograph changed Hoshino Micho’s life.一枚の写真が星野道夫の人生を変えた。
 He was a university student, and one day he was very attracted to a photograph in a book about Alaska.
彼は大学生だった、そして、ある日アラスカの本の中の一枚の写真にとても惹きつけられた。
It was a photograph of a small village in the middle of the wilderness.
それは荒野の真っただ中にある小さな村の写真だった。
The village was ShishMaref. その村はシシマレフだった。
 Michio wanted to visit and experience that place for himself.
道夫は自分でその場所を訪れ経験したいと思った。
So, he wrote a letter to the mayor of the village.
そこで、彼は村の村長に手紙を書いた。
The mayor invited Michio to Alaska, and his dream came true.
村長は彼をアラスカに招待し、彼の夢はかなった。

❷  For one summer, Michio lived among the Inuit people in that Alaskan village.
  ひと夏の間、道をはそのアラスカの村のイヌイットの人々の中で過ごした。
He learned about Inuit food, family life, and culture.
彼はイヌイットの食べ物、家族生活、そして文化について学んだ。

He also learned how to live without city convenience.
彼はまた町の便利な物がなくてどのように生活するかも学んだ。
The Inuit hunt for meat and gather berries for food.
イヌイットの人々は食料として、肉をもとめて狩猟し、食料にベリーを集めた。
They have a long tradition of living harmoniously with nature.
彼らには自然と調和して生活する長い伝統がある。
Michio understood something very important – all living things share this planet.
道夫はあることが分かった。すなわち、すべての生き物がこの惑星を分かち合っている(ということを)。
That summer, he became a part of the Alaskan wilderness.
その夏、道夫はアラスカの荒野の一部となった。

In-reading ① What did Michio learn in the Alaska village?  He learned in the Alaskan village?
He learned about Inuit food, family life, and culture, and he also learned how to live without city convenience.
②  How do Inuit people live?   They hunt for meat and gather berries for food.

❸  After Michio finished university in Japan, he returned to Alaska.
日本の大学を卒業後、彼はアラスカに戻った。  
For 19 years, he traveled around Alaska as a photographer.
19年間、彼は写真家としてアラスカを旅してまわった。
He often camped in severe weather to take pictures of wild animals.
 彼は野生動物の写真を撮るために厳しい天気の中でキャンプした。
Once he stayed in tundra for a month to take pictures of caribou.
かつて(一度)、彼はカリブーの写真を撮るためにツンドラに1か月間滞在した。
Michio felt lonely in the wildness, but he also felt free.
道夫は荒野の中で孤独を感じたが、同時に開放感も感じた。

❹  Michio shared his feelings of freedom and wonder in his photographs.
  道夫は彼の写真の中で自由と驚きの感情を(読者と)共有した。
He showed us playful polar bears, beautiful mountains, and other wonderful scenes.
彼は私たちに楽し気なホッキョクグマ、美しい山々、そして他の素晴らしい景色を見せてくれた。
However, his life ended suddenly. しかし、彼の人生は突然終わりを告げた。
He was killed by a bear when he was camping alone in Kamchatka in 1996.
彼は1996年に、カムチャツカ半島でキャンプをしているときに熊によって殺された。
Michio once wrote, “We only have one life to live.
道夫はかつて書いている。「私たちの一生は一度しかない。」(私たちには生きるための命は一つしかない)
Michio’s life was short, but his pictures will live with us forever.
彼の人生は短かったが、彼の写真は私たちと共に永遠に生きるだろう。

Even the Inuit are losing their land.
イヌイットの人々でさえ彼らの土地を失いつつある。
Now they have to change their way of life.
もはや、彼らは生活様式を変えざるを得ない。

❻ As ice turns into water, and sea levels rise, Alaskan islands get smaller.
氷が水になり、海面の高さが上昇するにつれてアラスカの島々はより小さくな.る
Shishmarf is slowly disappearing. シシマレフは消失しつつある。
Scientists say the Arctic is getting warmer twice as fast as the rest of the Earth.
科学者たちは北極は地球の残りの地域の2倍の速さで暖かくなっている。
Our lives will change, too, if we do not take care of our planet.
私たちの生活もかわるのだろう、もし私たちの惑星(地球)のケアをしなければ。
Michio’s photographs remind us of our beautiful past, but the future may be very different.
道夫の写真は私たちに私たちの美しい過去を思い出させる、しかし、未来は(過去・現在とは)違っているかも知れない。
What can we do to pass on this beauty to future children.
この美しさを未来の子供たちに伝えるために私たちは何ができるだろうか。
