History of Clocks
❶When we need to see the time, we look at clocks and watches. 私たちが時刻を知る必要があるとき、時計や腕時計を見ます。
Today we can check the time very easily. 今日 私たちはとてもたやすく時間を調べることが出来ます。
However, it was not so easy long time ago. しかし、昔はそんなに簡単ではなかったのです。
Time keeping has a very interesting history. 計時にはとても興味深い歴史があります。
In-reading (読解)❶ Was it easy to check the time long ago? No, it wasn’t.
❷Ancient people used nature to read the time. 古代人は時刻を読むのに自然を利用しました。
About 6,000years ago, Egyptians used the sun. およそ6000年前、エジプトの人々が太陽を使いました。
They put sticks in the ground, and the shadows told them the time. 彼らが地面に棒を刺し、その(太陽の)影が彼らに時刻を告げました。
These were some of the first clocks in the world. これら(の影)が世界初の時計と言われるものでした。
In-reading (読解)❷ When did ancient people make some of the first clocks in the world? They made them about 6000 years ago.
❸At night, people could not use the sun. 夜には人々太陽を利用できません。
About 3,500 years ago, Egyptians started to measure time without it. およそ3500年前、エジプトの人々は太陽を使わずに時間の計測をし始めました。
They put water in pots. 彼らは甕に水を入れました。
The pots had tiny holes in them. その甕には中に小さな穴が空いていました。
The water decreased little by little. 水が少しずつ減りました。
The lines in the pots told them the time. 甕にある線が彼らに時刻を知らせました。
In-reading (読解)❸ Why did Egyptians start to measure time? Because they couldn’t use the sun.
❹About 1,500 years ago, other people used fire. およそ1500年前、別の人々が火を使いまた。
They burned candles, for example. 例えば、かれらはろうそくを燃やしました。
The candles gave them light, and people saw the time by lines on them. ろうそくによって彼らは光を得、人々はろうそくに付けられた線によって時間がわかった。
In-reading (読解)❹ About 1,500 years ago, what did people use to measure time? They used fire.
❺About 700 years ago, people started to make mechanical clocks. およそ700年前、人々は機械時計を作り始めました。
At first, they used weights to power these clocks. まず、彼らはこの時計に動力を与えるのにおもりを使いました。
The clocks told the hour with bells. 時計は鐘によって時間を伝えました。
However, the weights were big and heavy, so these clocks were difficult to move. しかし、重りは大きくて重く、時計を動かすのは困難でした。
In-reading (読解)❺ What was the problem with mechanical clocks? The problem was that they were big and heavy, so they were difficult to move.
❻About 500 years ago, people improved their clocks. およそ500年前、人々は時計を改良しました。
They used springs to power the clocks. 彼らはばねを使って時計に動力を与えました。
The springs were small and light. そのばねは小さくて軽いものでした。
So people could move the clocks easily. そこで人々はたやすく時計を動かすことが出来ました。
Eventually, people began to carry watches. ついに、人々は腕時計を持ち運びをしはじめました。
In-reading (読解)❻ To improve the clocks, what did people do? They used springs to improve them.
❼Today, we have clocks and watches everywhere. 今日、いたるところに時計や腕時計があります。
This is the result of many great inventions and many people’s efforts. これは多くの偉大な発明と多くの人々の努力の賜物(結果)です。
Even now, clocks and watches are improving. 現在でさえも、時計や腕時計は改良されています。
❽We cannot really see the time, but ancient people tried to recognize it. 私たちは実際に時間が見えることはありませんが、古代人はそれを認識しようとしました。
They used different ideas and technologies to measure it. 彼らは様々なアイデアや技術を使って時間を計測しました。
When we look at our clocks and watches, we can easily see the time. 私たちが時計や腕時計を見ると、簡単に時間が分かります。
Now it is time to recognize the wisdom of these ancient people. もうこの古代の人々の英知を認めるべきときがやってきています。
Time Event
About 6,000years ago, Egyptians put (sticks) in the ground, and (the shadows) told them the time.
About 3,500years ago, Egyptians put (water) in pots with tiny holes in them. The lines in the (pots)told them the time.
About 1,500years ago, People burned (candles) and saw the time by the lines on them.
About 700years ago, At first, people used (weights) to power mechanical clocks.
About 6,000years ago, People used (springs) to power the clocks. They began to carry (watches).
